A Talk with Linda

[Kay is in his office, sorting out his affairs. Everyone else might be taking this as a fun chance to go home, or else they should in his opinion. Kay's intentions are practical, and he wants to follow through on a promise.]

[He's already planning on asking Una and Narvin to come along, despite the fact that he knows there's a bit of oil-and-water there, two differing perspectives might get him answers concerning Linda's dilemma than just his own. One with a miraculous gift to face situations of high pressure with cool and calm and ingenuity (something Kay holds in high regard), and another with a brilliant intellect rarely encountered. Too bad he has none of that latter calm and is prone to fits of destructive paranoia.]

[Still, with both of them helping him it will be a great advantage.]

[When he sees Linda go by, he calls out to her.] Esquivel. I want a talk with you before I go.

Una and Narvin's big Adventure

[It's a mercifully short line at the intake, and by mercifully short one also means that it's nearly a fifteen minute wait. Kay is staying with them because he has to clear the tech that he brought back. For once, he's not wearing his security uniform from Quadratus but rather his valued black suit, something he's been missing and something that's crucial to his identity.]

Are you both doin' alright? [He checks back with them, waiting for the big sluggy grub alien in line in front of him to squirm forward.]

[It was sort of expected, and part of why he invited them both. Una was compassionate and caring towards a woman in quiet distress, feeling obligation and with the urge to do the right thing. Narvin was a dispassionate problem solver that was, at least, intelligent and Una could use his resourcefulness.]

[If she didn't slap the shit out of him for being rude, first.]

That was one of the dome test types that we have but yeah, it works out too cold. We got a few others, too.

She also really wants to know if that missile will make it through. Though I'm also bettin' there's a way to stop that missile altogether, even if it might get fired all over again. [Which is a larger problem.]

[una_persson]

[Una just gives Narvin an exasperated I beg your pardon look as he swipes the communicator. She has to admit, though, his grasp on the technicalities exceeds hers. She'd like to drag him to the Time Centre to meet Alvarez, she thinks. And see which one would try to murder the other first.]

There's plenty of ways to stop a missile, and not all of them involve technology as the only solution.

[Narvin arches an eyebrow at Una.]

No, it's simply the best way.

[Translation: It is the way that Narvin is most comfortable with. Ergo, "best."]

Feel free to free for all the order and stuff.

They're both pretty useful ways. We got one already fired that we need to stop, or make sure that it won't go through the dome. [He fidgets with one of the items, pulling back a spring and letting it pop back into place over and over.]

We also gotta make sure they won't be fired in the future, and that tech won't be able to do.

[Too many people to neuralyze, and it really wouldn't do much good if he did. Sooner or later the subject of the dome would be brought up again, and even with hypnotic suggestion those against bombing would be overruled by others.]

Social engineering. [She smiles, not entirely humourlessly.] Well, I know we won't be depending on Narvin here for that, so I daresay I have my work cut out for me.

[timesbureaucrat]

I shall happily leave that to you. I prefer the sort of engineering that involves maths. Proper engineering.

As for the missile that's already launched, we'll need to destroy it quickly. The easiest would be to hack into the missile system and send something up to intercept the first missile while in flight. It's not subtle, but it's fast.

That's going to require some very precise temporal targeting. The transporters on Quadratus are good, but as I said to Linda—there is a margin of error that we must take into consideration.

And if you did teleport it, where would you make it go? You'd have to think out some kinda target.

[He doesn't comment on either sort of engineering. Both would be necessary here.] I'm willin' got pay, sort of. Within the limits of what the village would allow, I could give you guys a weapon or device of your choosing. I'm a senior agent I have authorization to do that, especially since this information could come in useful here, too.

[timesbureaucrat]

A weapon? [Narvin's curiosity perks up.] What sort of weapons do you have access to? Would we be allowed to see them first?

[Una gives him a look and doesn't even try to hide it.]

What are you hoping for? A Phalanx anti-missile gun that fits in a pocket, perhaps?

[most_feared]

I have a feeling Narvin could actually make a pocket that could hold one of those at full size.

But I gotta go by size limit. Blackway will only let us take certain strength weaponry through, so I'll make you guys a line-up you can choose from after this mess is over. [He wants to be sure they can help Linda first- he has to be able to give Zed results before he can make promises of gifts.]

[timesbureaucrat]

[To Una, with an eyebrow raised:]

You have to admit that the town could use a few anti-missile defense systems right about now. [And although Narvin's interests usually tend towards highly advanced experimental technology like the assassin Aesino or the timeonic fusion device, an antique anti-missile gun would produce a very satisfying explosion, he thinks.]

Yes, fitting it in a pocket wouldn't be too great a challenge, it would be getting it out again that's the problem. [Inside the transdimensional space in the pocket it would be practically weightless, but its full weight and mass would return as it was pulled out, leaving a person attempting to hold multiple tonnes of metal and mechanics.]

I'll settle for something I can carry in my hands.

[una_persson]

Likewise. And perhaps a bit of sabotage on the side.

[She rubs her hands briskly.] Well. Where shall we begin, gentlemen?

[most_feared]

Depends on what you'd like to play with.

[He turns around, picks up a few things off the table behind them, and starts placing them in front of them.]

Energy shield. Crystallized barrier projector. Magnetic forcefeild... [He starts naming off their potential testing scenarios one by one.]

[timesbureaucrat]

Energy shield. [Narvin promptly voices his opinion.]

In addition to testing ways of bringing the dome down, I would like to see if it's possible to trace the origin of the dome to its source, perhaps by tracking an energy signature or a power nexus. It may not be the priority of the people in the town, but I want to know who did this and why. [And, always in the back of his mind, the question of whether they are a potential threat to Gallifrey.]

[una_persson]

[Una raises her eyebrows, almost as if to say "ooh, well done, sunny jim", but doesn't say anything as she turns to examine the barrier projector.]

You're going to have to explain these devices to me, I'm afraid.

How about I show you. I'll take us out to the designated test site.

We'll try out these and then later we'll see about Linda's. I'm guessin' this will be a tough nut to crack.
