Yes. [He says it before he thinks much about it, though. He hasn't liked the idea of being on his own for so long, beside the fact that he basically sequesters himself. But still there's a sort of shame in admitting that he even has bad dreams; he says it to Boone, though. Maybe he's drunk, or maybe he already seems like a good guy to trust.]

[But that would also be shit, because he wouldn't want anything bad to happen to him.]

[He looks over at Boone. And then, almost as if it wants to make Niko blunder with what he says, the dog gets up to hop off the bed now that Boone's moved. That's what stops Niko from making sure Boone knows that being his friend might mean bad things come to him.] Might be good to have someone watch my back. [Is what he says instead.]

[He just sort of nods, and lies back down again. He has to focus hard on the ceiling when his head spins again.]

Maybe it'll help us both.

[Having Rex sleep beside him has been somewhat helpful, but he's still been having nightmares. He'd rather not have to wake up alone, though. Rex is helpful that way- it gives him something good to focus on. Otherwise he'd probably be awake the rest of the night dwelling on it, too scared to go back to sleep.]

I'll help get your back, too. He promises. And I'll help you watch out for bad dreams. I'll keep you safe. And maybe you can tell me what your good memory in this Vegas place is sometime.

Sometimes I like to have the good things in there, it's hard when so much of the bad fills up my head.

[He rolls onto his side to look at Boone with a grunt, grabbing a thin excuse for a cheap pillow and propping it between his arm and the side of his head.]

[He takes off his shades and sits up to set them on the table with his bottle, then kicks off his boots and settles back with one arm over his forehead and the other over his stomach. He doesn't close his eyes because that just makes him feel sick right now, so he just stares drunkenly at the ceiling where it isn't covered by his arm.

Niko's words and the drink have softened him a little. Maybe it'll be okay if he just tells him about Carla. After all, Elle knew about her from the moment they met- though to be fair, that was because he wanted her to find out who sold her. He's quiet for a few moments, then he finally decides.]

Met my wife in Vegas.

[They're both tired, so he isn't expecting to be elaborating on it now. He will if Niko asks, though.]

[He is drunk as hell, but sober enough to note that Boone hasn't mentioned a wife before, and if he's here sleeping with him, and Rex is in the room, then it's likely that there's no wife to go back to. Whether it means that she left him or worse. But it sounds like a good memory if it's worth staying in a place that he doesn't especially care for.]

Tell me about her?

[He thinks about the question briefly before replying. Once, he'd told Elle that she was dead and that was all she needed to know. There wouldn't have been much point in mentioning her at all now if he didn't want to talk about her though, and he finds he does.]

Her name was Carla. She used to sing at one of the casinos on the Strip. Went to watch her a few times. She was only a backup singer, but she still had a nice voice. Lived in Vegas all her life. She liked talking, and she liked that I listened too. Lot of times I never knew how to say what I wanted to, but it always seemed like she knew anyway. She was smart like that. Smarter than I was.

[He talks softly, and it's obvious he still loves her. That's not something he's ever tried to hide, though. And lying here with too much whiskey in him, he finds himself missing her again. He always misses her, but it hits him harder some days than others.]

[It is, and it makes his chest pang because it's so familiar. Practically an echo of a hurt that's following him around. Or maybe he's an echo of it, if his came later? Does it matter? Probably not, if they're still in love with ghosts.]

She sounds like a catch. I'm glad you had that chance.

[He traces some dumb print on his blanket with his finger.]

Have you ever met a woman that smiled at you like all she wanted you to do was to smile back? No hugging, no kissing, no "take me now". Just this smile that says, "I would like to see you happy." That was Kate.

[He is about to ask what happened with Carla, and the question almost forms on his lips. But then the "W" doesn't fully come out and he rolls over onto his back again.] Let's not think about the bad. Let's go to sleep with the good.

[Boone doesn't know if he's as glad as he should be. For the most part, he still thinks that if he hadn't fallen in love with her she'd still be alive. When he does feel glad that she loved him, he can't help but feel like he shouldn't. He nods into his arm.]

Yeah.

[Not that Carla ever really had to encourage him to smile. He did it a lot around her anyway. In fact, it was usually him trying to get her to smile in Novac.

He's glad when Niko doesn't ask what happened. It's nice to just leave the conversation there, with the good things about her, than at "she's dead". Whatever happened to Kate, he thinks Niko must feel the same. He turns away from the other man to curl up where he is without worrying about blankets, and falls asleep quickly.]

[He tries to hold onto that good thought, that first smile. The way that Kate made him feel. It is easy to drift off like that, looking at his friend's back.]

[If he hears Boone make a noise in the middle of the night, he'll probably put his hand against his back and mutter at him. Otherwise it's a comfortable space to fall asleep in.]
