[A shrug.]

It's all very well, I suppose.

[In other words: not really.]

Crowds. Chaos. [It's a security nightmare, he thinks but doesn't say.]

It isn't my idea of fun.

[There isn't much that's Narvin idea of fun, really.]

[Smiley actually chuckles. His impression of Narvin is that the word "fun" is scarcely a part of his vocabulary.]

Nor mine, in all honesty. An eclipse seems like a rather peculiar event to celebrate.

[timesbureaucrat]

Indeed.

But no stranger than the endless versions of solstice holidays that humans have. It's as if people like to believe that the planetary motions of their solar system are somehow special, and not the mere universal side effects of gravity.

[likeaswift]

[Smiley shrugs.]

Traditions that began when men did not know better have a way of lingering. And I suppose that there are many who find mere gravity to be rather dull.

[timesbureaucrat]

Clearly those people have never fallen from a great height.

[likeaswift]

[There's a slight flinch at that; the memory of Frey, Battersea Bridge, the fog, the river. He'd fallen without a shout, without a splash, leaving Smiley with broken fingers and unspeakable remorse. He can't quite keep the bitterness from his voice when he responds.]

Just as well for them, then.

[timesbureaucrat]

[Narvin cocks his head at the subtle change in Smiley's demeanour.]

Yes, I suppose.

[Pause.]

At least it's quick.

[likeaswift]

[Smiley curses inwardly; he is getting old, giving away too much of himself, he is sure. Perhaps it's this that reminds him of Karla—that and his interlocutor's unassuming stature. He feels a sudden anger, an urge now to not buckle.]

If one is lucky it is, I daresay. Quicker than a spider's venom—though not so quick as an explosion.

[timesbureaucrat]

[Now it's Narvin's turn to be discomfited. His expression freezes for a split second as he thinks about how explosions don't always kill quickly.]

Aren't we fortunate, we have both options right here: spiders and explosions.

[likeaswift]

[Smiley may look bored, even drowsy, but he doesn't miss that flicker of expression for an instant. But he seems to shrug, and his slight change of subject is almost idle.]

What do you make of the incidents? One hears all kinds of rumours.

[timesbureaucrat]

They are concerning, to say the least. I really couldn't say anything else about them, however. As you say, there are plenty of rumours. But alas, there seem to be few facts. Or if there is any hard information, the security team is keeping it close to the chest. [Much to Narvin's frustration.]

[likeaswift]

[Smiley knows what the security team is saying, of course. But he too is keeping it close to his chest.]

Because they have suspicions, do you think?

[timesbureaucrat]

Perhaps. Or they have more than suspicions but are trying to avoid a possible panic. Or they have nothing at all and don't want the populace to realize that investigations are failing. There could be any number of reasons for the silence.
