Yeah, I was. First Recon. It's a sniper battalion.

[He pulls another leg off the spider ball and drops it. Then he reaches up and taps the insignia on his beret.]

That's a First Recon beret. We all wore them.
timesbureaucrat: (hmm)

[personal profile] timesbureaucrat 2014-07-13 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
And you still wear it. Even though you aren't military any more.
thumbsdown: (nice of you to show up)

[personal profile] thumbsdown 2014-07-14 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah... well.

[He doesn't really feel like getting into the reasons behind it. He changes the subject.]

What did you do before you got here?
timesbureaucrat: (bureaucrat)

[personal profile] timesbureaucrat 2014-07-14 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I was a technician, like I am here. But back home I specialized primarily in temporal tech, first working on upgrading time capsules, then later on developing temporal weapons.
thumbsdown: (you don't wanna do that)

[personal profile] thumbsdown 2014-07-14 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[He nods as if he knows exactly what he's talking about, takes a drink from his bottle, and tosses a spider leg at the fence.]

Got no idea what temporal is.

[Well, nobody ever needed him for his brains. Probably a good thing.]
timesbureaucrat: (frustration)

[personal profile] timesbureaucrat 2014-07-14 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
How can you not--?

[Narvin sighs under his breath. It's like talking to Leela, only fewer words come out of Boone.]

Pertaining to time. Time travel. Time manipulation.
thumbsdown: (if that's what you think)

[personal profile] thumbsdown 2014-07-14 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. Huh.

[He shrugs.]

Well, time travel isn't really something that happens back home. Wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people didn't know what it meant.

[So a temporal weapon would be...? A... time weapon? Time travel weapon? Or is he thinking about it all wrong? Yeah, he's probably completely wrong.]
timesbureaucrat: (head tilt)

[personal profile] timesbureaucrat 2014-07-15 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
Still, I would think one could work it out. Tempus, temporis, neuter word, Latin, means "time."

thumbsdown: (get outta here)

[personal profile] thumbsdown 2014-07-15 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[Boone frowns at that and goes back to his bottle. The guy sounds almost like Arcade. He can't tell if that's a good thing or not.]

I don't like Latin.
timesbureaucrat: (Default)

[personal profile] timesbureaucrat 2014-07-15 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
What, had a strict and unpleasant Latin teacher?
thumbsdown: (it's not really my thing...)

[personal profile] thumbsdown 2014-07-15 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[Flatly-] No.

[He pulls another leg from the ball in his hands.]

Got some slavers back home who call themselves Caesar's Legion. I've heard them use Latin. Not sure how much they know, but...

[They just managed to ruin that language for him, much to Arcade's dismay.]

I know they're not the only people who use it. Just makes me think of them, that's all.

[And thinking about them pisses him off.]
timesbureaucrat: (rly?)

[personal profile] timesbureaucrat 2014-07-16 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Caesar's Legion?

[He peers at Boone again. Nope, Boone definitely doesn't look like he comes from the Roman Era. Must be an interesting timeline he comes from.]

Is the original still around or was someone inspired by history?
thumbsdown: (not out here for nature walks)

[personal profile] thumbsdown 2014-07-16 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired.

[He says the word with a slight curl of the lip, his eyes narrowed.]

Can't say I know much about the original, but I guess it doesn't matter. It was better left in the past.
timesbureaucrat: (snark)

[personal profile] timesbureaucrat 2014-07-17 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I spent some time in the Roman Empire. [He says it the way other people might say "I spent some time in Utah."]

They were orderly, had a good appreciation for proper bureaucracy, but were otherwise primitive and barbaric. Nevertheless it seems that every other petty dictator wants to pretend that his or her autocratic nation is New Rome.
thumbsdown: (i never know what to say)

[personal profile] thumbsdown 2014-07-17 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't get why.

[He drinks a little more, pulls another leg from his spider.]

Their leader went as far as to name himself Caesar, said he was the "Son of Mars" or something. All his men pretty much worship him. They all wear skirts and old sports equipment for armour. Not complaining about that part, though. Means I know exactly who to shoot.
timesbureaucrat: (bluegrey)

[personal profile] timesbureaucrat 2014-07-19 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
It is terribly convenient when your enemies wear highly obvious and distinctive garments.

They are your enemies I take it? [It's definitely the impression Narvin is getting, but best not to make assumptions. Perhaps Boone just has a strong aversion to men in sports equipment.]
thumbsdown: (watch it)

[personal profile] thumbsdown 2014-07-19 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Huge pain in the NCR's ass.

[And that was before they took Carla from him.]

Managed to kick them outta the Mojave, though. Wouldn't have come here if they were still around. Couldn't have left without knowing what I'd come back to.

[He won't be surprised if they try to come back one day, but he doubts it'll be anytime soon.]
timesbureaucrat: (sidelong glance)

[personal profile] timesbureaucrat 2014-07-20 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
Congratulations. Vincit qui patitur.

[Narvin thinks its funny, in his dry way, to use Latin to congratulate Boone for his victory over the Legion.]
thumbsdown: (she talked a lot)

[personal profile] thumbsdown 2014-07-20 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[Boone doesn't think it's funny, and pauses in his drinking to offer Narvin a dark look.]

You done with the Latin yet?

[Congratulatory or not, it still bothers him.]
timesbureaucrat: (bluegrey)

[personal profile] timesbureaucrat 2014-07-21 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I'm finished.

[Pause.]

It was also the language of Earth science once, on the northwestern continent, and the language of the mottoes of a good number of nations.
thumbsdown: (a lot of thoughts)

[personal profile] thumbsdown 2014-07-21 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah... friend of mine knows some Latin, and he's tried to tell me the same sort of thing. Not just Caesar's Legion using it. It's what most people associate it with now, though.

[He's tried to see it from Arcade's point of view, but he just... can't. He hears Latin, and he thinks of the Legion. It bothers him to think they've ruined an entire language for him, but he supposes it's not like he was ever going to learn it or anything. And with the exception of Arcade, nobody else speaks Latin anyway.]
timesbureaucrat: (glance)

[personal profile] timesbureaucrat 2014-07-22 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
I'm impressed that their leader convinced his followers to learn an ancient and half-forgotten language. That must have been more effort than actually conquering things. It's amazing the lengths egomania will drive a person to.
thumbsdown: (for carla)

[personal profile] thumbsdown 2014-07-22 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Not so sure they all know much of it, to be honest. Think some of them do, but Caesar's probably got better things to worry about.

[He has a lot of men, and there's only one of him. He wouldn't be surprised if Caesar was fluent, but he can't imagine the entire Legion is.]

It's how they all greet each other, though. And some gave themselves Latin names. The important ones.
timesbureaucrat: (snark)

[personal profile] timesbureaucrat 2014-07-23 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I bet they all call themselves "Magnus" or "Maximus." Ridiculous.
thumbsdown: (let me aim that for you next time)

[personal profile] thumbsdown 2014-07-23 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, pretty much. Legate Lanius, Vulpes Inculta, Lucius, Aurelius of Phoenix, Silus, a bunch of others.

[That's enough names to get the point across. Besides, he doesn't remember all of them. Just the more important ones.]

And yeah, there was a Gaius Magnus too last I heard.

[So Narvin is right there. He never heard of anyone with Maximus in their name, though.]
