He shrugged. "A bit of both, I suppose. I'm dedicated to my work and it isn't terribly conducive to relationships. Nor is my personality, I'm given to understand."

He didn't think about the state of his personal life (or lack thereof) in terms of happy or unhappy. It just was. He viewed singleness as a basic inevitability and so didn't spent much time thinking about alternatives. He might as well ponder what life would be like if he'd been loomed a Prydonian from the House of Lungbarrow instead of a Patrex from the House Zdyllara. His life just didn't happen that way so, he judged, why think about it.
